X-Mas in Michigan
Anyone remember the "nephews in a box?" Look at them now.
Kyle was a drummer in the high school jazz band and now plays a variety of intstruments. Next fall he plans to go to college on the west side of the state, near Lake Michigan.

Zachary is now too long for the frame. He's grown 6 inches since school started this fall. I remember Christmases when we begged them to go back to sleep. This year I'd finished my third cup of coffee before we were able to roust Zak. He's a sophomore in high school with interests in video games, tennis and he's about to venture into creative writing.

Ray and Carol: Still cute after all these years. This is Carol's last Christmas of her 70's. They are making noises about staying in the sub-tropics for future holidays.

Happy John Henry Day to All
Rain clouds are building over the lakes and mountains, and after "She's Watching the Detectives," David Byrne's voice comes over the radio with "Psycho Killer." Will I ever hear that song again without the image of Ryan in the camp chair in the Hermosa kitchen munching potato chips in time, with his marvelous deadpan humor?
I am missing you, today, my fellow HIA John Henry Day alumni. People out here seem to think today is for relaxing, or worse yet, shopping. Nobody seems to understand that this is LABOR day; we should be laboring on some project. The only constant is change; people move in many directions; and traditions mutate, but I am remembering you all and a moment in time that I treasure in memory. I should probably go home and mow the lawn now.

Alabama City a Symbol of Hope
"Since the beginning of man's awareness, the rainbow, spanning the horizons, has been a mystic symbol, displayed in the heavens to signal the passing of yet another storm and the birth of new hope for mankind."
Quick Answers to Burning Questions
I don't have a car this weekend, so I'm not going to go anywhere. I lost my cell phone, so I don't have to worry about all those people who never call me anyway interrupting me. I should have time to do even more research. Here's what I've found so far:
"Rainbow City was named after U.S. Highway 411, called Rainbow Drive, which runs through the middle of our city. Some of our older citizens say it was named after Alabama’s Rainbow Division that fought in World War I."
"The 42nd Rainbow Division was formed in August 1917 of National Guard units from 26 states and the District of Columbia. After Chief of Staff Major Douglas MacArthur remarked that the Division "would stretch over the whole country like a rainbow," the coalesced national guard units were christened Rainbow Division. As the war progressed Douglas MacArthur was promoted to commander of the 84th Brigade and finally to commander of the Rainbow Division."
I don't know about you guys, but I think it's funny that a town might have been named after a highway.

I wonder...
how did Rainbow City get its name? Was it because they have a way more than usual number of rainbows? One day did some one say, "hey we sure get alot of rainbows around here maybe we should call our little burg Rainbow City!". Or was it just because someone thought it sounded optimistic? Or were their founders just fond of rainbows? I wonder if there is anyone who could find out?
